Sustainable fashion choices - New Year’s resolutions

No matter whether or not you make New Year resolutions, we think that there is this strong "New Beginnings" feeling that all of us feel when the clocks turn 00:00 on December 31st.

From our own experience, personal resolutions inspired by the blank slate that the new year brings should be small or take the form of small steps that can guide us towards a bigger goal. (We’ve all seen an overly ambitious resolution flame out quickly, haven’t we?)

So if making more sustainable choices about your clothing is something on your mind when it comes to resolutions, it might feel a little overwhelming. Where do you start? Where can you find trustworthy information? What’s realistic for your budget?

Here are some examples of simple and achievable resolutions that you are more than welcome to copy and paste into your resolution list (or take inspiration from and make them your own).

  1. Read the label of each piece of clothing you buy and pay attention to:

    1. Where it’s made

    2. What the fiber content is

    3. What the care instructions are

  2. Check if the brand you’re considering buying from has a clear and actionable sustainability policy ( https://goodonyou.eco/ is a great resource to quickly and easily check how our favorite brands are doing)

  3. Think about how many items of clothing you buy per month/quarter and figure out a way to divide that number in half.

  4. At the beginning of each season, deep clean your closet and donate, sell or pass along the pieces you no longer wear

  5. Only buy a piece of clothing if I can truly visualize yourself wearing it more than 30 days

6. Borrow or rent items you know will only be used for a single occasion.

7. Make every other piece of clothing you buy either second-hand or vintage.

8. For every piece, you buy in chain store, buy one at a local boutique, local designer, or local second-hand store

9. Have at least one conversation per month with a friend or family member about conscious consumerism.

10. Find one sustainable fashion innovation that interests you (i.e. vegan material, natural material, or recycled material) and focus on learning about it and supporting it this year.

These are 10 small steps but added together, you might just find yourself achieving the more ambitious goal of a sustainable wardrobe.

What are your conscious consumerism resolutions? Please share them with us in the comments below.
