<image:title>Blog - Circular Fashion in NYC</image:title>
<image:caption>New York is known as the fashion capital of the world, and this title tends to come with a lot of waste. However, NYC is actively working to make itself the capital of sustainability, as well as fashion, through textile waste management. The average New Yorker tosses 46 pounds of clothing, textiles, and accessories every year. As a city, NYC produces nearly 200,000 tons of textile waste annually. Thankfully, the city already has some sustainable practices in action to recycle some of this waste. For example, according to the provisions of the New York Department of Sanitation, local companies are required to recycle textile waste if it makes up more than 10% of their trash. Additionally, the amount of zero-waste shops, boutiques, second-hand stores have been growing steadily at a local level each year. Find stores that support the environment with the NYC Fashion Green Map. But are these solutions enough? There is great potential to build better waste management practices for all wasted textiles, and local entrepreneurs and nonprofits are taking matters into their own hands.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Defining Sustainable Fashion - What is sustainability?</image:title>
<image:caption>We hear the word “sustainability” so often that many people feel it has lost its meaning. Sustainable design, sustainable development, sustainability revolution, sustainable future… What are we really talking about? A sustainable way of life is one where humans use natural resources in such a way as to fulfill our needs while ensuring that we leave the planet in the same, or preferably better, condition than we found it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Beginners Guide to a Conscious Closet - 2. Care For Your Garments</image:title>
<image:caption>Clothing care matters. When washing, follow the garments’ specific care label instructions to ensure it gets what it needs. Prolong the lifespan of your items by handwashing and air-drying, and if you choose to machine wash, opt for cold or low-temperature water. We all have that one garment that’s missing a button or has a tear in the sleeve. Instead of tossing it, purchase up a basic sewing kit at your local pharmacy or dollar store, and mend it by hand.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Making sure that every person involved in their supply chain is paid a fair, living wage. Putting meticulous effort into choosing fabrics that are sustainable in all senses of the word. For example, they favor European suppliers to minimize the need for lengthy transportation and make sure that they work only with natural fibers and organic cotton. Breaking down the elitism of sustainable fashion. BITE studios strive to retain prices that are accessible to a wider demographic than most sustainable luxury brands.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Donations unfit for recycling can still be used as raw materials for stuffing or insulation. Those clothes usually are blended materials that are a bit more worn or damaged. The process is quite simple: trims are removed (zippers, buttons, etc.) from each piece of clothing after which they are shredded into tiny pieces that are then pressed into insulation sheets or stuffing bales.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Happens to Your Clothes AFTER Donation to SCRAP? - Tier 2</image:title>
<image:caption>Clothes that are made of textiles that are recyclable, but are not too worn for reuse, are placed back into the raw material production cycle, to make recycled textiles for new clothing. There is a limited amount of garments that have the most chance to be remade into new fabrics because the technology of recycling processes for used clothing is still not perfect. As of now, clothes of simple fiber content (i.e. 100% cotton, 100% polyester, etc) have the highest chance of being recycled. Recently progress has been made in effectively separating natural and synthetic fibers, which allows us to capture both types of fibers without losing fiber in the process, but for now, it’s still difficult to recycle blends (keep that in mind when you’re buying t-shirts and jeans!).</image:caption>

<image:caption>This portion of the clothing will be reused through donation or sale. The Tier 1 clothes are either new or slightly worn, Those clothes are in the best condition (or even brand new), have a unique style and are made by popular brands, therefore we believe that they can have a new life in someone else’s hands.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - State of the City</image:title>
<image:caption>In New York, consumer textile waste contributes to about 5-6% of our designated landfill space each year. Clothing and textiles are treated as a disposable commodity, rather than for what they truly are… the renewable resources.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Where do your items go?</image:title>
<image:caption>Collected items are sent to our recycling partners for sorting and processing. A portion of the clothing will be reused through donation or sale, while recyclable items are placed back into the production cycle as textiles for new clothing. The small portion of donations unfit for recycling will end up used as stuffing or insulation. We ensure that none of your clothes end up in the landfill.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - A Brief History…</image:title>
<image:caption>Before SCRAP, CEO Patrick Metellus, an avid contributor of charity and community work, would check an extra suitcase filled with clothes for donation each time he traveled. His partner, Paloma, has experience working for Victoria’s Secret, Kate Spade, and Barneys New York, gaining firsthand insights into the behind-the-scenes of the fashion industry. Together, they aim to scale their vision for a circular fashion economy and shift the industry toward a more transparent and sustainable future.</image:caption>

Our clothing pick-up service and drop-off locations are available in the five boroughs of NYC: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island. <image:title>About (Revisions) - A Brief History…</image:title>
<image:caption>Before SCRAP, CEO Patrick Metellus, was an avid contributor to charity and community work ever since he was a little boy, thanks to his mother’s teachings. For as far back as he can remember, she collected used clothing from friends and family, shipped it to Haiti where she was originally from, and together with Patrick, they would travel there to distribute it to less fortunate people. That’s where he understood that a piece clothing that he might no longer want, can have a second life in the wardrobe of someone for whom it will be new and exciting. His partner, Paloma, has experience working for Victoria’s Secret, Kate Spade, and Barneys New York, gaining firsthand insights into the behind-the-scenes of the fashion industry. Together, they aim to scale their vision for a circular fashion economy and shift the industry toward a more transparent and sustainable future. To learn more about Patrick and the history of SCRAP follow his LinkedIn profile.</image:caption>

<image:title>About (Revisions) - Where do your donations go?</image:title>
<image:caption>Clothing donations made to SCRAP are separated into two streams. About 10% of donations we receive are barely used designer pieces. We ship those pieces to our partner Tersus Solutions for serious cleaning, before finding a new owner for them in local boutiques, like Bitter Grace. We aim to recycle the majority of clothing that we collect. We currently put this clothing through an automated sorting process in New Jersey, run by our partner Sort & Export. We are currently recycling cotton materials using Renewcell’s technology in Sweden and exploring wool recycling with iinouiio in England. Our long-term aim is to create new products from the materials recycled from your donations, a truly circular economy of fashion!</image:caption>

<image:title>Home (Revisions) - We make it easy to keep your clothing out of the landfill and put it to productive use.</image:title>
